Alfaaz – अल्फ़ाज़ – الفاظ – means words in Urdu; and it is the silencing of our words that led to the creation of Alfaaz. Originating as a magazine in India, in 2020, Alfaaz is a direct challenge to publications that censor the “political.”
Today, we are a community-driven and intersectional zine collective with contributors from 8+ countries around the globe. In our zine, run by women & queer folks, we publish works that amplify historically marginalized voices through various mediums of arts and literature––all equally (and unapologetically) opinionated.
At the center of it all, as it was in 2020, is our mission of creating safer spaces that foster belonging, emphasize community, and encourage the catalyzation of positive change within the mainstream zine scene. We strive to be an accessible & anti-capitalist publication with our free zines, events and open-source and accessible learning.
